The story takes place in Seoul, 2011. Lee Yoon Sung is a talented MIT-graduate who’s working on the international communications team at the Blue House. He encounters dangerous situations while solving a variety of cases, both big and small, for people who need his help, and eventually becomes a “city hunter.”
This actor is the reason why most people start watching this drama, but I must say that the story is awesome. The synopsis DramaWiki has is very vague. It only refers to the action part of this drama, which is very exciting. It’s a whole story about revenge and destroying 6 important leaders in Korea. Lee Yoon Sung has be trained by the best friend of his father and they both planned this revenge. On the first episode, we see what actually happened 28 years earlier. This beginning was a little harsh, since there were killings and a lot of political matters. However, the real story, in 2011, begins on the 3rd episode.
That is where the romance story starts. Kim Na Na and Lee Yoon Sung meet and of course, there is a hate between them. They will start working almost as colleagues and their relationship will change. They will even start living together. Despite the playboy image Lee Yoon Sung shows, he is also very caring and denounce injustices. His role as City Hunter will disturb their relationship, and he would have to choose between her or justice/revenge.
For the moment, I find the character of the ‘father’ very important. I was very impressed by this person. I think that he is going crazy about this revenge, but when we think about the touching sacrifice his friend has made, we forgive him. He is at the time an antagonist and a protagonist. While he supports Lee Yoon Sung, we assume that he will never let romance get in their way. He is definitely an important character. I would describe him as a hateful character whom we do not actually hate.
As for the love ‘triangle’, there is the prosecutor who is looking for the City Hunter. Yong Ju is a man who also defends injustices, but following law. He is confronted twice with difficulties. First, when he discovers that his father is actually a criminal of law. Then, he understands that law is sometimes not enough to prosecute criminals. He is a character whom I didn’t fall for, but I loved how his character changed.
That he died while helping Yoon Sung was one of the most touching moment of this drama.
There are a few other important characters. The veterinarian whom helped City Hunter a few times and had a difficult relationship with Yong Ju. The president’s daughter who is present throughout the whole drama, but who does not have any impact on the story. The ‘ahjussi’ who’s hilarious and lovely.
What I love about this drama is the fact that there are two parallel stories with a lot of characters, but it is well written and we never get confused. The acting was excellent and the presence of Lee Min Ho and Park Min Young gave a plus. The OST is also beautiful, every single song.
Sadly, the ending of the drama is the imperfection of this wonderful work. In the last episodes, we do not see any progress in the main couple’s relationship, because it was concentrated on the mission. The whole City Hunter story is very interesting, but the lack of Yoon Sung – Na Na was a little disappointing. There were too many different things happening all at once, and it became too complicated. The final scene with Yoon Sung and his adoptive father was extremely touching. I cannot really express the feeling when they hold their hands together. And the most disappointing is the real ending. I did not understand what happened >.>
