A young woman named Ji Hyun was enjoying absolute bliss as she was about to be married with her fiancé, but her perfect life is shattered in a car accident that left her in a coma. She is given a second chance at life by a reaper, but it comes with a condition: she has to find three people outside of her family who would cry genuine tears for her. In order to do this, she borrows the body of Yi Kyung, a part-time employee at a convenience store.
Since there were no other interesting drama airing, I decided to watch 49 Days. The fantasy genre of drama always seems very interesting (Who Are You?, My Girlfriend is a Nine-Tailed Fox, Secret Garden…). At first, the story itself didn’t caught me, there were too many important characters and everything was so fast that it was hard to follow. I also found Ji Hyun too fake, Yi Kyung too depressed, Kang too old, Minho too pitiful, In Jung too bitchy and.. the scheduler too handsome. So basically, my first impressions were not very positive.
However, after three episodes, everything got so much more interesting and clearer. First, we must start with the genius idea of the three most sincere tears. As the viewer, we already know that those three tears will be very difficult to get since tears from her family are excluded. Ji Hyun realizes that the world was not as simple as she thought and she suddenly faces the betrayal of her fiancé and her best friend. Restricted by the rules of the 49 Days, she has no choice but keeping her presence silent. Even though at first, she only wants herself to survive, Ji Hyun learns little by little to care about others. She will start working on her own for the first time and will try to help her body lender, Yi Kyung.
Yi Kyung is a depressed girl who does not have any motivation. We are really curious by what kind of person she actually is. At some point, she tried to kill herself because she thought that she was crazy. Throughout the first half of the drama, we discover that she had a boyfriend who died and we want to know who is this guy, but they never show it. As smart drama viewers, there are many guess. Also, the reason why she was the one chosen to help Ji Hyun is also mysterious.
The scheduler is the handsome Jung Il Woo. This character brings the comedy side of the drama, because we have to face mostly melo-drama and hardships. Of course, he is not only a simple scheduler and he has a greater important nearer the end of the drama.
He is actually Yi Kyung’s dead boyfriend.
We must not omit the main couple of the drama: Ji Hyun and Han Kang. The development is very subtle, but Kang is just a touching guy. It is hard to not like him, no matter what he does.
Finally, we got the ‘couple’ Min Ho and In Jung. They are stupid. They could have lived a happy couple life, but for the need of money, they planned this stupid marriage with Ji Hyun. At first, their relationship is not clear, but though many flashbacks, we understand it. I have no hate towards these two characters. I only know that both of them will face a drastic downfall and we will laugh at them.
Saying too much about the details of this story will reveal too many spoilers, but I must admit that there are many moments for which I have been surprised. This plot in general is quite dramatic and there are all kinds of characters whom we love or hate. However, the ending was really unexpected and very very heartbreaking. However, the finale was also considered as perfect. Everyone gets a ‘happy ending’. The last sentences pronounced in this drama is “I’m Happy”.
This drama is 20 episodes of eye candy. We are brought to another world with a second chance. The power of love is re-discovered in another sense and we realize the evilness of humankind. I am really pleased with the whole concept! And finally, let’s mention the OST that is wonderful. There is a total of 10 tracks, without the instrumentals. They all match the drama perfectly. I consider the ones I listed the most beautiful and representative of the drama.
