The drama starts with Han Tae-Woong (Hyun Bin), a quiet, 17 yr-old math genius, entering a prestigious high school. There he meets Kim Jeong-Kyu, also a genius in mathematics. The two immediately develop rivalry and tension, but later become best friends. Through their conversations, we learn that Jeong-Kyu is a big boxing enthusiast. Meanwhile, Tae-Woong stumbles upon a little girl being bullied in the street and saves her. The girl develops a crush on him and gives him her pager so that she can see him again, but they never exchange names or contacts. They promise to meet again soon, but this never happens.

In a highly anticipated International Math Olympiad, Jeong-Kyu fails to fulfill his father’s expectations, and commits suicide in shame. Tae-Woong, who wins the gold medal, struggles from guilt, as he feels like he is partly responsible for Jeong-Kyu’s death. From guilt, Tae-Woong quits school, leaves home, and disappears.

8 years later, Tae Woong, now 25, is a nameless boxer, living a completely different life. He abandoned mathematics and pursued boxing in honor of Jeong-Kyu, but he still bears painful memories of his past. In a chain of events he meets Bo-Ra (Sung Yu Ri), a beautiful, but cold-hearted young lady. She is the daughter of a rich businessman, but has an incurable disease. After a chain of events, Tae Woong is hired as her chauffer. They end up falling in love, but Tae Woong discovers that she was the little girl that he met 8 years ago and that she is Jeong-Kyu’s little sister. Tae-Woong struggles in pain about his relationship with Bo-Ra, and returning memories of Jeong-Kyu.

Essbee’s Opinion

First of all, having my idol acting as the main character dragged me to this drama and I never regretted. Hyun Bin’s acting is impressive and touching. Even with a mustache and a beard, he still looks handsome. On the other side, Sung Yu Ri is really pretty and her acting was also really good. It is always hard to act a sick person. The made an excellenet couple and they haven’t received awards for nothing.

The supporting cast was all good. Gun Woo, the doctor was annoying in the drama, but I can accept him as a good guy through what he has done. Seung Ri is really pretty and she is a kind person even if she seemed bad at the beginning. All the boxing team was really funny and I especially loved Choon Shik who was a real friend  forever. Bo Ra’s father was a nice man too. We hate him once in a while, but he’s really a kind father. The “only friend” of Bo Ra, Deuk Nam, wasn’t that important, but I see in her the good friend. The math teacher who always plays basketball is a hilarious character

I adored the storyline. Even if it seems quite obvious, I still enjoy it. However, when I think about it, it seems that everything is too repetitive. They are together, they breakup, they reconciliate…. Anyhow, I just loved the story. They progression of their love is quite natural and nothing was too exaggerated. [spoiler] Even if she dies at the end, I’m still satisfied with the ending, since we knew that it was gong to happen. The last episodes are quite sad, and it maintains a good rhythm.[spoiler]

The soundtrack is also extremely beautiful and the instrumental theme song “The Snow Queen” is magnificent. I strongly suggest this drama if you are not annoyed by “typical drama storylines”… 🙂
